Ripcord’s Halloween Film Festival announces its 50-film lineup

Ripcord’s Halloween Film Festival announced its lineup on October 13: 50 horror, sci-fi, thriller and fantasy shorts, chosen from more than 500 submissions and arranged in seven themed programming blocks.

The festival opens online at ripcord.film on October 19 and is free. Registered viewers can watch every film and vote through October 22 to help choose the Top 10. Those ten shorts screen for a live audience at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on October 29.

The festival awards $200,000 in cash prizes. First place receives $100,000, which Ripcord describes as the largest first-place cash prize in short film festival history. The other $100,000 is shared among the rest of the Top 10.

“Fifty films made the cut from more than 500 submissions, and every one of them earned its spot,” said Charlie Cleveland, founder of Ripcord. “These filmmakers made something distinctive, and now it's the fans' turn. Watch, vote, and help decide which ten films take the stage at the TCL Chinese Theatre.”

Seven programming blocks

The programming team chose the films for their quality, their genre voice and their part in balancing the lineup. Each block holds six to eight films around a theme, with a guest curator.

  • Sweet Dreams, 8 films. Guest curator: Freddy Krueger
  • Love You To Death, 7 films. Guest curator: Alex “I’m not going to be ignored, Dan!” Forrest
  • But I'm Popular, 6 films. Guest curator: Carrie
  • Die Already, 8 films. Guest curator: Casper
  • Mindbender, 7 films. Guest curator: the mushrooms you ate and then saw God
  • We Did It To Ourselves, 7 films. Guest curator: A John Waters impersonator
  • Monster Party, 7 films. Guest curator: The Mothman

“We built each block around a theme, then worked to make sure it moves the way a great evening should: a little creepy, a little funny, and sometimes deeply strange,” said Vanessa Meyer, Program Director of Ripcord's Halloween Film Festival. “We think audiences will find a lot here that will surprise and excite them.”

Ripcord also premiered the festival’s official collectible poster, created by Jim “TAZ” Evans. It will be available at the October 29 screening at the TCL Chinese Theatre and online at 12am.live. See the poster.
